Bye Bye Baby Stuff (Hello Melancholy)

(Sorry for that interruption. I now bring you the post that was SUPPOSED to be up before a freak started coveting my child)

I'm feeling a little sad today. In an effort to rid my very small house of all space-sucking baby gear, I've been gathering everything up and slowly getting it out of here.

Last week it was the Boppy pillow, the bottle sterilizer and the baby bathtub. The week before that the swing, the Babynest, the co-sleeper and the tummytime baby Boppy pillow were evicted. Today I took the floor gym, and six bags of baby clothes to the consignment store. (Yes, even after the tap shoe debacle, they still like me and my stuff. Nice people, they are)

Today's run encompasses the last of my daughter and son's tiniest infant clothes. It represents a turning point in all of our lives but mostly, it represents my babies growing up. I can hardly think of this without tears welling up in my eyes and a lump forming in my throat.

We wish so much for the hardest parts to be over but when they are, our babies have become toddlers and then preschoolers and then kindergarteners. I know growing up is what they're meant to do but it still breaks my heart. I just keep telling myself that we will love having all the extra space. But I'm not really buying it...

***Be sure to vist Fidget, my renter this week. Her site is great and her most recent post, a tribute to a friend, was both bittersweet and deeply touching.

  • Aww, Iz, I feel for you! I just actually *bought* all that stuff but I'm already thinking about the day when I'll have to pack up all of it ... :(

  • This post made me slightly reflective... We have a ways to go in my house, but I too have started packing up some things. I'm not ready to sell them off just yet, but its still difficult just to put them in the attic. Even the smallest rooms seem a little bit empty after all that stuff is gone.

  • It is so tough to pack those things away...I remember.

  • I have all that stuff packed up in the garage and my husband keeps begging me to pass it on to the Good Will. It's so hard! I tell him I'm holding onto it to give to our friends if they ever get pregnant but the truth is I just can't part with it yet.

  • That's got to be hard... A moment of silence for you.

  • Luckly for me i have tons of baby cousins. So If i want the stuff back I can grab it and run.

  • This must be very bittersweet. I think it's fine to feel sad, but it also might be good to focus on all the great things yet to come--all the wonderful questions they'll ask, all the older-kid activities you can share with them.

  • Ahh, the moment every mom dreads- packing up the baby stuff.. :(

(I hid my Boppy in the closet when I had to rid myself of all things baby....no one has to know....)

  • I cried my eyes out when we packed away Ava's 0-3 month clothes. I can't even imagine packing everything up at once. Wishing you emotional strength.

  • I am not there yet, we are trying for another baby, but I can't wait until then. We need the space....My wife will probably share your feelings.

  • My kids are 8 and 11 and I still own every stitch of clothing they ever wore. I'm pathetic.

I also still have all the baby gear, though I think I finally found an unsuspecting pregnant woman upon whom I can unload it.

Their clothing though...I'm not sure I can part with it. Did I mention I'm pathetic?

  • i just moved an excersaucer and a pack-n-play into my house. it now joins the swing and the bouncy seat in the living room - and there's no more room to live! but i remember going through that when i got rid of the boys things - 7 years ago! they get big fast! and their mouths get sassy!

  • I know how hard that is.

I have two containers of clothes in my closet that I just can't give away - first onesies, teeny overalls, doll-sized shoes.

My husband just rolls his eyes when I tell him they're for the 'grandchildren.'

  • aww that is sad...we may not be done yet so our daughter's closet is overflowing with baby gear!! I hope to keep some to give to my kids when they have kids...if I have room!

  • I totally know how you feel - even when we had decided beyond a reasonable doubt that there would be no more babies at the Knox household - it was really heartbreaking to give those baby things away. It was way more concrete than just saying, "We are done having babies." A lot of it is still hanging around at my brother-in-law's house in the hopes that he and his wife will have babies and use it. Truth is, if it is only over there then I can visit the piles and remember the days of sleepless nights - oh wait, still have those - wiping little tushies - shit, I still do that, too! - well, anyway, you get the idea.

  • I have been thinning out my stuff because I am not sure we are done yet and even that is hard. I do plan on keeping the first outfits of each kid. I actually had a few things of mine that my mom saved for me. They are horribly dated but still precious to me.

  • I've kept a special outfit or two, and shoes for each of the boys. And I took TONS of photos before I gave things away. ;)

  • Man..you guys are a sweet bunch and SO WISE! You are right. There is so much still to come. And yes,I did hold back a few special things from the clean sweep mission. Some things I will NEVER part with.

But the stuff is really just symbolic. It represents babyhood and how quickly it passes. That's the part I find hardest to think about.

And yes, Nixie, there's a lot more to it than just saying you're done having babies. I agree totally.

    Thanks ya'll :-)

  • Yes, getting rid of the baby stuff is so hard. I just can't bring myself to do it yet. Certainly, I will never need a baby swing again, so why can't I part with it???

I found your blog via blog explosion and love it.

  • I am facing this task very, very soon -- my baby's just about in size 2T stuff and we've got an armoire full of outgrown baby clothes. I need to save a few things for the girls (to show how small they once were) and pack up the rest to donate/give away -- but it's so hard to bring myself to that. It really does signify the end of something big, a huge phase in life. Sigh.
